Jalen Mcluvin’s debut album “$en$ational” is exactly that: sensational
If $en$ational is Jalen Mcluvin’s first project, then we are in for a real treat for what comes after. The SoCal MC just dropped a project that blurs the lines of Alternative and R&B into a fantastic amalgamation of the two, putting it in the unique upper echelon of albums that can be played just about anywhere to a positive reception. Beach day, late night drive or anything in between, $en$ational has to be in your rotation.
The album contains ten tracks which seek sonic influence from a range of both contemporary and legendary sultry stars alike, from PARTYNEXTDOOR and Bryson Tiller to Jodeci and Brandy. Incorporated in the tape are aspects of old school 90’s R&B and hip-hop from the early 2010s, which proves that, while he may have an ear for the future, he doesn’t forget about the past.
And it’s not just his vocals and production that turn heads, but his introspective take on life and understanding of the listener also help take his creations to the next level.
“Throughout the process of making this tape, I really started to think about how I wanted people to listen to this,” said Jalen Mcluvin. “I want people to have a lot of fun and feel good when they listen to these songs…nothing here really sounds the same as the last thing you heard and making it a unique experience was definitely one of my goals.”
To make things even better, four of the ten tracks are self-produced by Jalen Mcluvin himself, which just goes to show you that his skill set extends beyond the microphone. Elsewhere on the LP, Jalen sought production from ELI, Marshy, Anderson CO and STONEY. He’s sticking with ELI on his next project; the pair have a collaborative tape dropping later this year. In addition, Jalen Mcluvin hinted at another collab tape, this one with DeuceDeux, but would not reveal a time frame for the project’s release.
Put those plans together with an increase in performances and recording sessions, and it’s clear to see that Jalen Mcluvin is setting himself up for success in the music world. It’s only a matter of time before his name is up there with all the rest of your favorite artists.
